Ever wondered how safe it is to exercise when you have haemophilia? A recent German study tracked over 1,000 real-world physical activity sessions and found that most patients with haemophilia A (PwH) are doing more than staying active, they’re doing it wisely.
What the Study Found
This 12-month observational study followed 23 people with moderate to severe haemophilia A. They recorded every physical activity they did whether it was walking, swimming, biking or even alpine skiing and their factor VIII (FVIII) levels at the start of each session using a digital tool.
Key highlights:
Most activities were low-risk (Cat I) like walking or swimming (78.6%).
Moderate-risk activities (Cat II) like biking and horseback riding made up 19.1%.
High-risk activities (Cat III) like skateboarding and skiing were rare but possible with higher FVIII levels.
Only 3 out of 1,011 sessions led to a bleed, and two of those happened during home workouts with FVIII levels near 1%.
14% of sessions were done with FVIII levels ≤3%, indicating some PwH are still taking part in activities even when factor levels are very low.

Why It Matters
The study reinforces what many already know: regular, safe movement is not only possible for people with haemophilia, it’s beneficial. But it also shows us the risk: physical activity must be paired with smart treatment planning.
- Knowing your FVIII levels before activity can help you:
- Prevent joint bleeds
- Maintain long-term joint health
- Improve quality of life
- Build confidence in physical fitness
This is where tools like MicroHealth become vital.
